About this deal

a b Garratt, John (15 March 2023). "U2 Have Never Sounded More Defeated Than on 'Songs of Surrender' ". Popmatters . Retrieved 15 March 2023. In the liner notes and in the press, Edge makes the point, repeatedly, that they recorded a lot of these songs when they were “very young men” and that Bono’s voice is much richer now, so why not re-evaluate them as men in their 60s, with a more refined vocal instrument? There’s also a general narrative voiced by multiple band members that the songs “weren’t finished” and here, now, he finally had the chance to finish them. (That these songs were somehow unfinished will be news to the millions of fans who have sung along to them at the top of their lungs, gotten them tattooed on their arms, or otherwise made them part of their lives for decades.) Richard Rainey – additional production (14), engineering (2, 9, 14, 19, 22, 24, 28, 31, 37–39), mixing (19, 37)

There is disappointment that a number of U2’s big-hitters don’t translate well on ‘Stories For Surrender’, but this revision hasn’t been a totally fruitless endeavour: you just have to dig a little bit deeper to find the reimagined material that’s truly worth savouring. The duo were encouraged by the results of their first session together, during which Bono sang over the Edge's musical sketches. [11] In the cases of several songs, including "Stories for Boys", " Two Hearts Beat as One", " Desire", and " Peace on Earth", Bono liked the Edge's demo vocals enough that he encouraged the Edge to sing on the final versions. [14] While experimenting with new arrangements for the songs, the Edge changed their keys, chords, and rhythms, [9] while Bono often rewrote the lyrics. [10] So it was a tad disappointing when The Edge later confirmed that the whole band had been involved in the “reimagining and re-recording” process, with the release of a somewhat sanitised version of ‘Pride (In The Name Of Love)’ hardly allaying fears about the project. Further uninspiring takes on ‘With Or Without You’ and ‘One’ followed, as did the increasingly unshakable belief that maybe these songs shouldn’t have been messed with in the first place.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Bono has publicly campaigned for peace: he and The Edge performed in a Kyiv subway station-turned-bomb shelter in May 2022, while he also recently joined Antytila for a surprise performance in London. Altered lyrics to the ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ single ‘Walk On’ reference war-torn Ukraine, with Bono defiantly singing: “ And if the dancer on the street wears a veil of tears / It’s a dance no army can defeat.” Over the course of recording Songs of Surrender, the Edge estimated that the group created 50 new song arrangements in total. [11] Songs such as " Angel of Harlem" and " Moment of Surrender" were in contention to be included on the album but were ultimately left off.
