About this deal

In this series of segments, Mr. Perkins and later Mr. Evans read The Railway Series stories. Each story is rewritten by Andrew Brenner and reillustrated by Loraine Marshall.

Christopher Awdry said that he had other material, which he hoped would be published. He narrated new stories about the narrow-gauge engines on "Duncan Days" at the Talyllyn Railway in Wales. [ citation needed] Illustrators [ edit ]Sir Topham Hatt, better known as The Fat Controller, is the owner of the North Western Railway on Sodor. His son Charles Topham Hatt II succeeded him in 1954, and his grandson Stephen Topham Hatt III became the Fat Controller in 1984. His son Richard will be the next Fat Controller. Skarloey is named after Skarloey Lake, the northernmost point for passengers on the Skarloey Railway. He is an 0-4-2 ST (originally an 0-4-0 ST). Skarloey's equivalent on the Talyllyn Railway is Talyllyn. He was built in 1864 and arrived on Sodor the following year. He first appeared in Four Little Engines. The story of Skarloey's early years was told in Very Old Engines, where it was revealed he was overly excitable and eager to make an impression before becoming a humbler and dedicated engine. Skarloey was laid to one side in 1943 when he was worn out, but was hastily reinstated during the events of Old Faithful. Between 1955 and 1957, Skarloey was overhauled in England and he returned to regular service in 1958. After Thomas the Tank Engine, Awdry was finished with writing any more books. However, due to popular demand, Awdry pressed onward. By the time Awdry stopped writing in 1972, The Railway Series numbered twenty-six books. Edward is the number 2 blue mixed-traffic 4-4-0 ex- Furness Railway K2 class locomotive and the first character to appear in The Railway Series. With BoCo, Edward runs the Brendam Branch Line, which travels from the station Wellsworth to Brendam. At the terminus, Edward often sees Bill and Ben who work in the Sodor China Clay Company ( SCC). The Rev. W. Awdry; G Awdry (1987). The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways. Kaye & Ward. p.126. ISBN 0-434-92762-7.

Ivo Hugh is named after the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Skarloey Railway and Rusty's driver. He is an 0-4-2 T, the Skarloey Railway's newest engine, and based on the Talyllyn Railway locomotive Tom Rolt. Ivo Hugh was built in the mid-1990s in the Skarloey Railway's workshops at Crovan's Gate. He first appeared in the book New Little Engine. Sir Handel Brown is the former owner of the Skarloey Railway. He often had other business to attend to, and was never seen in the books. In the Korean versions of the books, they translated the "Small" word as "작은"(Jak-eun) and the "Little" word as "꼬마"(kkoma) for distinction in South Korea. Thomas thinks that he can manage without his driver, until he makes an unexpected visit to the stationmaster's house one morning. Wilbert is called in from the Dean Forest Railway to help the Ffarquhar Branch Line engines, Donald and Douglas.A station pilot named Thomas longs to leave his yard to go out and see the world and has several adventures. When correctly translated the German name for the Railway Series (Wilbert Awdrys sprechende Eisenbahnen) translates to Wilbert Awdry's Speaking Railway. Thomas must work on Edward's Branch Line for the time being and meets Bill and Ben while he is there. Mike is a grumpy red 2-8-2 tender engine who prefers goods trains to passengers. Once in the story Mike's Whistle, when a stray cow steps onto the line, Mike crossly tries to “shoo” her away by whistling so hard, which causes his whistle cap to blow off completely and land in an adjacent field by the side of the line, and nobody can look for it anywhere. So they have to make whistling sounds for Mike as well.

The Railway Series is a series of British books about a railway known as the North Western Railway, located on the fictional Island of Sodor. There are 42 books in the series, the first published in May 1945 by the Rev. Wilbert Awdry. Twenty-six books were written by Awdry, the final one being written in October 1972. Sixteen more were written by his son, Christopher Awdry, between September 1983 and July 2011. The series features many anthropomorphic vehicles, including Thomas the Tank Engine. Thomas became the most popular and famous character in the series and the titular character of the television series Thomas & Friends from 1984 to 2021. The children's television series originated as adaptations of these stories.Godred was the original engine on the railway, and is named after one of Sodor's historical rulers. Awdry, Wilbert (1995). Tramway engines. Great Britain: Walter Heinemann Limited. p.30. ISBN 0-434-92803-8. Nearly all of The Railway Series stories were based upon real-life events. As a life-long railway enthusiast, Wilbert Awdry was keen that his stories should be as realistic as possible. The engine characters were almost all based upon real classes of locomotives, and some of the railways themselves were directly based upon real lines in the British Isles.
