At their best, the results offer glimpses of equally thrilling alternative directions the album could have headed in – one early variant of “Can’t Wait” carries a distinctive whiff of dank, juicy New Orleans variant of funk, while another piano-led variant is pure passionate gospel steaminess. Yet another version, a hoped-up live one, gallops with an exuberant energy that is deliciously at odds with the heartbroken frustration of the lyrics. Prior to its release, Dylan had been plagued by ill health – a life-threatening respiratory infection caused by inhaling fungus spores, which he put down to riding his Harley in the Louisiana swamps. As Steven Hyden writes in his essay in the excellent hardcover book that accompanies this 5CD box set – Volume 17 in the Bootleg Series and issued to commemorate the album’s 25 th anniversary – when Time Out of Mind emerged, reviewers tagged it as a ‘mortality album’ – pointing to songs like ‘Tryin’ to Get to Heaven’ (“Trying to get to heaven before they close the door”) or ‘Not Dark Yet’, which is written from the point of view of a man confronting his twilight years. In these mixes, the entrancing veil of swampy murk is mostly stripped away, revealing a more authentic sense of the rooms in which the sessions were recorded (at Teatro in Oxnard, California, and Criteria in Miami). Dylan’s voice is more upfront, the mix more immediate, live, and spontaneous.

CD 2 und CD 3 enthalten einige wirklich sehr schöne Alternativversionen. Besonders gelungen finde ich Red River Shore (1), Dirt Road Blues (1), Not Dark Yet (1), Standing In The Doorway (1), Make You Feel My Love und Highlands. Aber OK, in 2008 hatte ich für die BS Ausgabe von Tell Tale Signs (mit nur 3 CDs und einem völlig überflüssigen Buch in der Box) auch schon € 100 berappt, wobei das Teil 15 Jahre später regulär nicht mehr erhältlich ist und im Preis deutlich gestiegen ist. Bob Dylan is my favourite recording artist and Daniel Lanois has produced some of my favourite albums, but Time Out Of Mind was never my Bob Dylan favourite album, despite having some great new (in 1997) writing on it. I felt that his voice, which was at one of it's least easy on the ears stages in the mid-1990s, was being propped up, or glossed over, by the production. The 5CD Fragments contains a new remix of the entire album which presents Time Out Of Mind with a more 'natural' sound. It still sounds like a Lanois production but some of the more processed sounds are reduced to give a more 'live in the studio' feel. Personally speaking, this is definitely now my preferred version. Disc 4 contains live versions from the years 1998-2001 - I love live Dylan but for this period, I'm primarily interested in studio recordings, but the sound quality of these recordings seems underwhelming on first listen. I don't know if they're entirely audience recordings or a combination of sources but I would have far preferred professionally recorded versions.
