In Young Forever , Dr. Mark Hyman challenges us to reimagine our biology, health, and the process of aging. To uncover the secrets to longevity, he explores the biological hallmarks of aging, their causes, and their consequences—then shows us how to overcome them with simple dietary, lifestyle, and emerging longevity strategies. You’ll learn: But I wasn’t. I was doing complicated fitness theater instead, a complex kind of wellness that wasn’t doing me any favors, as shown by my constant injuries, mostly overuse ones from doing too much, getting hurt, taking a break, and starting all over again. That was me being stupid, and overcomplicating things.

Personally bought the book and his way of thinking regarding the new focus of the medical sector aimed at prevention at early age is great. Also his centenarian decathlon concept really appeals to me. Drawing a line from where I am now and where I should be now for the outcomes I want when I am 80 leads to excellent SMART goals and interventions to set me up for the best me in the future. The book culminates with an optimistic outlook on the future of aging research, highlighting ongoing advances in the field and their potential impact on our lives. Dr. Barzilai discusses the potential for personalized medicine, based on individual genetics and tailored interventions, as well as the ethical considerations surrounding the pursuit of extended lifespans. The Longevity Book explores what history, biology, neuroscience, and the women’s health movement can teach us about maintaining optimal health as we transition from our thirties to midlife. From understanding how growing older impacts various bodily systems to the biological differences in the way aging effects men and women; the latest science on telomeres and slowing the rate of cognitive decline to how meditation heals us and why love, friendship, and laughter matter for health, The Longevity Book offers an all-encompassing, holistic look at how the female body ages—and what we can all do to age better. It was the beginning of simplifying my relationship with my own health, and of focusing on a few things that matter. It was also the beginning of my personal friendship with Howard, which is one of the recent delights of my life. Have a topical focus on actionable anti-aging therapies or interventions that have been supported by peer-reviewed studies, not just “aging gracefully” The book begins by delving into the biology of aging, exploring how the aging processes affect our bodies and examining the cellular mechanisms that contribute to aging. Dr. Barzilai outlines the roles of genetics and epigenetics in aging, discussing how some individuals are predisposed to live exceptionally long lives due to specific genetic factors. He introduces the concept of longevity genes, which are genetic variations that help protect against age-related diseases and promote overall health. As our cells continually divide and copy their genetic information, the risk of imperfect copying increases. More cellular divisions with age provide more opportunities for errors to occur. Those errors can result in mutations that allow cancerous cells to develop and flourish." (p 101) Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are mature cells that have been reprogrammed to become immature, embryonic-like cells capable of developing into specialised cells that can be used for treatment throughout the body.

I have to say, once again I was pleasantly surprised by a Cameron Diaz book. Obviously she didn't write and research this entirely herself, but she did still put in a lot of effort. The tone is very conversational and accessible. Most importantly for this particular book is that Diaz has found a true niche, which is rare in this age of the internet. Psychological stresses and lifestyle choices age us biologically, and those shifts are measurable in our cells" (p. 85) Anthony Hopkins has autism, Wentworth Miller does too. Justin Timberlake, Jim Carrey, and Michael Phelps are but a few people with ADHD. We now know that intelligence genes are linked with both autism and ADHD. Many of the pharmaceutical studies we rely on do not take sex into consideration. Since hormones fluctuate over the course of a month, tests that use females can be a lot more complicated to analyze than tests that use males. Without taking hormonal shifts into account, it is impossible to determine how treatments might affect a woman over the course of a month." (pp. 55 - 56) Late menopause begins when you've skipped three cycles in a row. You shift from perimenopause to menopause once you haven't had s period for twelve months" (p 113)

The Longevity Diet: Discover the New Science Behind Stem Cell Activation and Regeneration to Slow Aging, Fight Disease, and Optimize Weight by Valter Longo: Another diet book, and recommended as well by David Sinclair, but older than Clement’s The Switch and with possibly troubling recommendations related to Longo’s non-profit fasting supplement company, ProLon. I really enjoyed reading The Body Book but I feel like the focus in that novel was largely on nutrition and fitness. With this novel, as much of both of those do have a huge component on longevity in life, I found the information provided was expanded to a more holistic outlook of the whole body. Loved it :) Feels like you're sitting down with Cameron Diaz and she really cares about your well being and wants to help you. I imagine us sitting in her chic apartment overlooking New York with a glass of red wine in our hands and she's teaching me a million things about ageing. (Inspired vision from the movie The Other Woman haha). The rate at which we age and the shifts that accompany ageing are unique for every person. We will age, but we will not all experience ageing the same way. Yet there are, generally speaking, some changes that will affect us all." (p. 67)
