I loved the characters in the story, but would have liked to have gotten to know some of them a little better. I enjoyed the drama within a set of relatives, where there is anger and love, sadness and happiness, reality and unforced exaggeration - things that exist in every family.

To Love and Be Loved is a meandering and often sad read as Merrin spends a lot of time treading water, surviving rather than living.This was a comforting read during the turn of the year with lots of changes going on and it was so nice to have a familiar writing style at the end of a long day to get lost in. Much of the remainder of the book is spent with our h living in a city 3 hours away, working at a castle-cum-luxury hotel, missing her Cornish home terribly, but continuing to stay away because of the gossip and the guilt of putting her family through the fiasco that was(n't) her wedding. Falling in love with Digby and being reciprocated was the most beautiful thing that had happened to her so far. As the French say, “the perfect is the enemy of the good”—perfection just does not exist and the belief it can be obtained will result in failure.Merrin is so humiliated and can't stand the idea of everyone talking about her she packs up her car and moves 160 miles away to work in a castle/hotel. Eventually, our h has to come home for a couple of big family events - one happy and one terribly sad. This book is naval-gazing British chick-lit about a s-u-p-e-r sensitive and self-conscious young lady who gets left at the alter in her tiny, close-knit Cornish village, by the rich, interloping only son of the wealthiest land-owners in the same village. Our dedication to an activity that we love brings countless benefits that align with those of other sorts of love. To love and to be loved is a gentle heartwarming read of love loss and forgiveness, based in picturesque cornwall and around the family kellow comprising of parents heather and Ben and daughters Ruby and Merrin!
