Dagobert’s successor, a Spanish priest named Pere Antoine, is also said to haunt the cathedral. More intriguingly, Antoine’s friend, voodoo priestess Marie Laveau, who often prayed at the church during her lifetime, is also considered to be one of the many spirits inside the cathedral.

A number of visitors have encountered the terrifying spirit of a headless drummer boy, who is believed to have been decapitated during a robbery at the castle several hundred years ago. The boy is seen moving throughout Dover Castle carrying not his head, but his drum, which he bangs on incessantly. One of the church’s well-known ghosts is Pere Dagobert, an 18th-century priest. He was a kind man, known for his generosity to the terminally ill. When a few members of his congregation revolted against the new Spanish rulers of the town and were executed, the governor left their bodies in the open to rot on the cathedral steps. Dagobert refused to let good Catholics be treated in such a way, and led a funeral procession to bury their bodies. Many believe his spirit now guards over the church. All opening times can be found here, but it’s usually open from 12pm to 11pm, Thursdays to Saturdays. Visitors have also spotted a mysterious Lady in Red: an unidentified female spirit in a red dress who reportedly searches the churchyard for her lost child. The spirit of a local miller has also been spotted searching the churchyard for a lost love, and the ghost of a former monk has been seen wandering in the area. One day in the autumn of 1947 Rev Merryweather was Being shown around the house by its then-owner, Mrs Cummings. All the time I was haunted by the fear that the ghouls responsible for this dreadful event would be watching me. I dreaded least they should again profane and violate the church.”– Reverend Lewis Barker

Like the city it serves, the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans is a font of strange myths and legends. Originally built by the city’s French rulers, the modern cathedral wasn’t completed until the 1850s. According to lore, the ghosts of the old structure came along for the ride. More skeptical minds might cast suspicion upon the church purely because it serves as a haunted house every Halloween. It’s possible that the church is believed to be haunted because it looks scary and people want it to be haunted. That being said, numerous accounts of strange, inexplicable organ music as well as of visitors feeling a sense of dread without probable cause lead many to believe that the old church is in fact haunted by the spirits of former worshipers. Located down a small path about half a mile from the main road, the church was left to ruin in 1890 after the Victorians decided it was inconveniently placed and built a new church in the centre of the village. And inside of the church is a ghost called the White Lady, who is Lord Dering's wife. When she died, he had her buried in a lead coffin and then placed in an oak chest within the church. She can be seen walking around the St. Nicholas' Church halls. And if this isn't the most haunted town out there with all of these ghosts, I don't know what is. Somewhat surprisingly, this collection seems to suggest that O’Donnell had more of an appreciation for scientific research of the paranormal that has previously been suggested. Other theories speculate that it is haunted because it is facing the wrong way. Churches traditionally face east, the direction from which the sun rises, which is associated with the location of heaven. One of the world's most famous paranormal photographs was taken at the Church of Christ the Consoler located at Newby Hall in Northern Yorkshire. In 1963, Reverend Kenneth F. Lord took this image in the church. He was trying to get a shot of the altar and he noticed this ghostly figure in it once he developed the picture. According to the Reverend, there wasn't anyone near the altar when he took it. St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Staten Island is yet another Anglican/Episcopalian church that is widely believed to be haunted. A common stomping ground for paranormal investigators, the 18th-century church, which includes an equally frightening cemetery, is said to be home to disembodied voices, chimes, and other noises that cannot be readily explained by rational science.

One such legend that Elliott O’Donnell was said to have fictionalised was the now famous story of two sailors who, in 1887, stayed the night in 50 Berkeley Square, London, only for one to die as he fled the house in terror, while the one who lived to tell the tale, told of seeing an angry spectre approaching both men. Believed to have been built in the 11th century, the remains of St Theobald's are a striking sight nestled among a scenic field. A visiting exorcist claimed the girls spirits were tied to their rooms and the phantom forms seen in the rooms were the girls. And as for the shrieking Annie heard, those were the three girls screaming and sobbing over the cruelty of their father. People still spoke about it in 1883, when people reported hearing phantom flutterings in the church. They believed the raven to be the spirit of a murderer who committed suicide, but who was buried in consecrated ground, rather than at the crossroads as customs dictated. Another theory explored the idea that a murderer and their victim had been buried side-by-side in the vault. Such close proximity meant their spirits couldn’t rest, and many believed the raven to be the soul of the murderer. Nowadays, Bilsington Priory is much in demand as a wedding location, as its pristine grounds and scenic surroundings make it perfect for anybody who wants to have that storybook wedding. As an adult, and after some years in America, O’Donnell made Cornwall his home, and it is here he wrote his first novel For Satan’s Sake, which was published in 1905.
